Santa’s Milk Drive
Two years ago, we partnered with Heidi from Foodie Crush, Smith’s Food & Drug, and Utah Food Bank to bring Santa’s Milk Drive to our local community. With over 200 gallons of milk donated, the inaugural event was a great success, and we are back in a bigger way this year! On Saturday, December 10th, from 12pm – 4pm, Foodie Crush and the Dairy Council of Utah/Nevada will be at the Smith’s Marketplace in Millcreek (3215 Valley St., Salt Lake City, 84109) encouraging milk donations and passing out yummy samples. All donations benefit Utah Food Bank, and Smith’s will match 1:1 each and every donation during the event. In addition, Smith’s has committed to donate an additional $5,000 worth of milk as part of their company-wide “Pour It Forward” campaign, which is part of the Great American Milk Drive.
“We are open to using whatever resources we can to help Utah Food Bank feed people in our community,” says Marsha Gilford, Smith’s Vice President of Public Affairs. “This event will achieve unexpected and wonderful results.”
Launched three years go, the Great American Milk Drive is made possible by the nation’s dairy farmers and milk companies, and the goal of the campaign is to deliver two million gallons of milk to food banks across the country. Since its inception, Utah communities have come together in a big way to make that goal a reality. At several different milk drive events over the past 3 years, Utahns have donated over 12,000 gallons of milk to local food pantries, and we are excited to add to that total with this event.
“Philanthropy is so important for kids to appreciate all they have, and to help those that don’t, says Heidi Larsen of Foodie Crush. “At day’s end of our inaugural milk drive, my daughter and her tweenage friends helped persuade customers to donate over 200 gallons of milk to Utah Food Bank. This goes to show that if a bunch of 10 year olds can make a difference, the rest of us should too.”
If you are not in the area or unable to make it to Smith’s in Millcreek this Saturday, you can donate to this specific event online at: milklife.com/givekroger. Entering your zip code when making an online donation ensures that your donation will remain in your local community.
