The Fuel Up to Play 60 National Summit

Fuel Up to Play 60

For National School Lunch Week we wanted to give a shout to Fuel Up to Play 60 (FUTP60) for all it does to empower students to eat healthy and get active! FUTP60 is an in-school nutrition and physical activity program launched by the National Dairy Council and NFL to help encourage youth to live healthier lives. Because of Fuel Up to Play 60, 16 million students are more active and 13 million students are eating healthier.

The Fuel Up to Play 60 National Summit

This last summer, 156 Student Ambassadors and 56 Educators involved in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program came together from 45 different states to participate in leadership activities and workshops at the FUTP60 Summit held at Perdue University in Indiana. These opportunities provided Student Ambassadors and Program Advisors with learning and leadership training opportunities to enhance their school’s FUTP60 program for the following school year.

Get Involved with FUTP60

Laura Haynie a Program Advisor and Kayt Ward, our Utah State Student Ambassador both from Cedar Ridge Middle School in Utah attended the Summit. Laura got their school involved in the FUTP60 program by doing a FUTP60 Assembly, brain breaks in the classroom, making healthy smoothies and snacks, and creating fun posters to get the students involved. Both Laura and Kayt had excellent things to say about the Fuel Up to Play 60 Summit. Laura thought it was a great opportunity to learn from schools around the nation and see how versatile FUTP60 could be for each individual school. “I took away from the Summit that we are really trying to get kids active and eating healthy. That’s the purpose of it all.” Laura even won a milk cooler for her school to encourage students to drink milk, a nutrient rich beverage packed with protein, calcium, vitamin D, and potassium.

Utah’s Student Ambassador

Kayt Ward, the Student Ambassador here in Utah, worked extra hard in the FUTP60 program to be able to attend the Summit this year. Kayt had a goal set early on to become the student ambassador. She took the initiative to go the extra mile with FUTP60, took challenges, and shared with others what she was doing. She was selected because of the quality of her application. Some of Kayt’s favorite experiences at the Summit included participating in activities with different NFL players and hearing their stories, playing flag football, making healthy smoothies, visiting a dairy farm, and learning how to be a better leader in her school. Katie said, “This Summit was really fun and the opportunity changed the way I work.”

This is the 7th year of the Annual Fuel Up to Play 60 Summit and it was a huge success! We look forward to many other great events put on by FUTP60.

FUTP60 was created with students for students. It’s an extremely unique program that gets students, teachers, families, and the community involved. FUTP60 encourages youth to be the leaders and take charge. For National School Lunch Week if you aren’t already involved check out how Fuel Up To Play 60 can benefit your school and community.
