If I were a cow, I’d be a heifer…

Guest blogger Jennifer Olsen writes about expecting their first child.

Expecting a New Addition

That’s Right…A heifer is a young cow before she has had a calf, and once the heifer has calved she is considered a cow.  It sounds silly, but I would be considered a heifer since I’m two weeks away from having my first baby.  Luckily, I’m not having a calf ;).  My husband and I are very excited to find out if we are having a boy or girl.  The nursery is decorated in farm animals including Jersey and Holstein cows  ;).

Our First Nursery

I have been very busy trying to play catch up in the office I work in (Hillside Dairy owned and operated by my in-laws).  After I have the baby I will be returning to work right away for about ten hours a week. Farming season is here there is plenty of office work to do.  My husband has been extremely busy with our Jersey dairy and irrigating the corn.  Dairy life is different from other jobs, it’s hard to take time away from the farm.   The “cows” have to be well managed and taken care of everyday and the crops we grow for cow feed have to be irrigated on a schedule. I joke and tell people my husband will probably have to irrigate the day we come home from the hospital.
