6,100 Clean, Calm, Contented & Curious Cows

The Bateman Brothers are skilled and seasoned dairy farmers, and they have developed an impressively clean, precise, safe and innovative operation. Each day, from their picturesque location on the edge of Utah Lake, they fill 6 milk trucks, totaling 500,000 (yes, that is 1/2 million) pounds of milk per day. Working in cooperation with the Dairy Farmers of America Cooperative, the milk from their Holstein/Jersey dairy is sent to processing plants where it is made into quality milk, cheese, butter, and yogurt.

Operating and managing a large dairy takes an incredible amount of care, coordination, and planning. While the 4 Bateman brothers manage the dairy with their father, they employ over 80 people to help keep the cows healthy, safe, clean and comfortable. In many cases the Batemans’ employees have become part of the family – some have worked on the farm for over 30 years and brought children into the business. Jason Bateman is proud to have such good, loyal families working with him and caring for his animals. In order to maintain the health of the cows and deliver high quality milk, groups of employees are dedicated to specific tasks. A 7-man crew works to take care of the calves – about 25 new babies are born on the farm each day. Currently the farm has about 1,100 calves being bottle fed twice per day. That takes a lot of man-power, and Jason says, “These are the hardest working men on the farm.”

Other groups of workers are dedicated to keeping the dairy clean, which naturally reduces risk of infection and allows the entire operation to run smoothly. Still others monitor cow data, maintain records, and work on reproduction management. A group of 19 is dedicated to harvesting corn in the early fall – a task done with precision-equipment and GPS guidance. In addition to running a state-of-the-art dairy facility, the Batemans farm 3,000 acres on the property, producing a portion of the feed for their animals.
